World Book Day 2010

Every year readers around the world celebrate World Book Day. It is a UNESCO project and in the past we have sorted fiction onto their continents of origin. It has been very interesting.

This year we have a display of our newest books and where they come from.

Books come from everywhere. They give us an inside view of living anywhere, everywhere, any time and every universe!

'Delany reads!' week

This year each Stage created a display of books for themselves, displaying favourite books and other reading materials.
Each display was very different however the pics are stuck in a camera and we cannot fnd the lead to download them. Sigh.

For staff, we released the Lexile reading program, and students in Year 7 will be coming to the computer room in Term 3 to find out their Lexile level. We have heaps of new books and the books are really easy to find.

When we get the pics, we will add them.

Delany Book Club news

The Book CLub met for the first time this year at lunchtime today.

Some were members last year but others are new, so we introduced ourselves and told the group what we are reading.

We are going to meet on Wednesdays and bring our lunch, book and a friend!

Gabrielle (Year 9) is reading The Outsiders.

Reanne (Year 9) is reading The Juliet Club.

Mishlene (Year 10) is reading Protrait of a lady.

Samantha (Year 10) is reading In ecstacy.

Hazel (Year8) is reading New moon.

Bowen (Year 10) is reading The diary of Anne Frank.

Mrs R has just read Declaration.

Next week Students will be hearing about an email from South Carolina.

Maybe we will get PageTurners running again!

Its been a slow start

What a crazy year but a good one too.

First we are getting our special reading area where the staff library used to be. The library looks bigger and more open. Just wait until we get the new shelving and furniture!

Second, we have Mrs Huang with us. If you don't know, she is really experienced with computers and printers and other things that cause us headaches. Remember to smile and say hello for she is still getting to know us.

Third, Tomorrow is BOOK CLUB first day! Yay! Can't wait to see what everyone has been reading!

On receiving an award

Yesterday it was announced that I am Australian Teacher Librarian of the Year for 2008.
Yes, really! What an honour! How unexpected. I need to search for a pic of being knocked over by a feather. My friend Marita thinks I should get one wearing a tiara!
I think I will do both!

It is not that things arent humming here because you and I know that the there is plenty going on and that the whole school is involved. It is unexpected because I see so many school ibraries like this.
Teacher Librarians are passionate people; passionate about their students and reading and passionate about new things. They delight in providing resources for you and get excited about new applications on the Internet. Teacher librarians are innovators and leaders in literacy, information and they are at home in print and the digital world.

I am these things. I am proud to be a member of this profession and proud of my fellow professionals. I think there should be more opportunities to celebrate what we are doing in our schools!

Thank you, Marita, who approached me and the Principal of Delany, Peter Wade in Term 1, and organised my nomination. You have given me the biggest gift of my professional life.

A return visit - La Jolla Country Day School

Some of you met Mrs Xuereb (on the left in this photo), a Library Media Specialist from this school who visited us in June. I called on her at her school in San Diego on my way back to Australia. First, it is a private school and also a very special school. There are 2 libraries and 3 Teacher librarians. What did I like?

The way their computers were installed on tables. Took little room and easy access. There were 50 computers for students to use in the library.

The way the prizewinning books were shelved at the entry to the library.

The tables were organised for seniors to use at any time.

That amazing lounge space for quiet reading. It had amazing windows and views.

The reading competition. What I liked was so many students actually completed this. I think the prize was a barbacue. Sounds good to me!

What I DIDNT like, was my hard disk corruption and I lost all the photos.
I also LOVED the bright pink bits in Mrs Xeureb's hair and had arranged to have my hair done too, so I also didnt like having to cancel because another appointment was more important. (Sigh!)
So many good things and I have no pictures!

Update 8: London (2)

The second visit was to Woolwich Polytechnic, an old school which has been moved to brand new buildings. The Library Manager, Mrs Humphries, also manages much of the computer services for staff and students and has recently toured other libraries. She is enthusiastic about visiting just as I am! This school has a lot of students who are new to English, and I was very interested in the Accelerated Reader program that they are offering. We will have a look at this too.

Most UK libraries that I saw are not big spaces but they use the space they have very well. Have a look at the this bay end at Woolwich.

I was lucky enough to visit Mrs Laura Taylor at the City of London Academy. It is a new school and is a very unusual design. The library is very busy and she encourages students to share what they like to read. Here are some postcards from Year 6 from surrounding schools. I think Mrs T really likes to get letters, don't you!
It is part of a much larger display. Check this picture to see if you know all these authors.

See the library window? It is covered with student suggestions. Note the school has a large open space in the middle. The weather can be wet and cold in the UK.

Students can also earn merit points if they write reviews. They are kept in a folder at the desk.

Seio
This is not a big library, and it can only take one class at a time. There is a sixth form library for seniors though, and this has many tables for study.

What impressed me about this particularly colourful and busy library, were the acoustics. Although there was sometimes 60 students in a small space and students were not quiet, the noise levels were fine. L_TAG, something to consider in our refurbishment.

Do you remember the students at Rotherham last year? This year I could not visit them, but their Librarian, Helen Smith, came to visit me in Birmingham. She has just refurbished their library. L_TAG, we will be getting some photos which will give us some more ideas for our own library.

So many schools to see and people to visit!

I started out in Nottingham with a group of librarians I met last year.
My friend Fiona is now in a wheel chair. She says she was training to be the Olympic stair diving champion, so you can guess how she came to be there. Still, Librarians do many things well, and one of them is talk! We had a great time and more importantly, I gained a fresh view on the future of libraries and the way we will be assisting you in the future.

Update 4: Barcelona and Gaudi

Gaudi was an innovative, imaginative, creative architect of parks, buildings, homes, even churches. He died in a traffic accident over 80 years ago and the church is only now being completed. I watched with fascination as craftspeople worked carefully on the plaster detail before it was lifted into place. It was a magic time, then suddenly, the spell was broken as they put down there tools and all went to lunch!

The pictures are of Parc Guell, a public open space and a reception pavillion at the entry, and the interior of a home. What a home! I tried imagining living in it. I wished we had more time to REALLY experience Gaudi.

Update 3: Ahhh Venice!

One day in a very special place is not enough, so we had 2 days. A ride on a gondola to the sound of 2 Italian tenors.. yes, nice. Then we explored the teeming lanes of Venice, so much to do there. We saw the Murano glass blowers and of course we bought some too.

Bonn. Warm. Autumn leaves drifting in the streets and over the cars but warm, so wonderfully warm. Check out the raspberries! We ate these as we wandered the streets and watched the Beethovens be positioned for the day.

Why so many Beethovens? Well Beethoven was born in Bonn and many copies of this statue have been decorated by different artists, are wheeled out and displayed each day. It was interesting just to watch people passing by who were very curious. The raspberries didn’t last long so we had this on the banks of the Rhine.

Hi everyone!

This trip has been different. I have not been able to get online very often, so I have collected some thoughts and will post them all now.

We arrived in Japan, walked out the airport and saw this little glass room. 'Hmmmm', I thought, 'Where is the coffee?'

But it was not a coffee bar, but a room for smokers. Suddenly I became respectful of the Japanese, protecting the atmosphere from smoke. However it was a land of extremes. We went through the streets of Narita to find an ordinary Japanese place for dinner. It was small, friendly, crazy too, and what did we see? Wait until I next have access to my photos. I will add it. 27/8/09

End of Term and what happened?

It started with Delany Reads Week and the Borders buying trip. We are STILL completing the cataloguing for this. You bought some really amazing books, many of which are not in any of the libraries in our union catalogue!
Then we had the Librarians visit. Since then, we have had regular contact with these librarians and now we have latest information on our noticeboard.
The Manga workshop has created a big interest and I am going buying again over the holidays!

Then we had a couple of weeks before we launched Delany Book of the Year.
We have the 3 sets of 6 books featured at Circulation and there are more students than usual reading. However the Younger Readers selection has a very wide range from Year 3 to Year 8 levels and already the L_TAG are wondering if we should be looking at a different way to select our short list.

George is busy working out how to organise the Book of the Year Awards morning tea with the L_TAG for his gold award and today held his first meeting with the group. It's looking good, George! Last year we entered the morning tea through the doors of Hogwarts Library; this year promised to be even more interesting.

The L_TAG also came up with the idea that the library is tatty and needs to be renovated. The staff Think Tank think that too and so do I.
I have bought a book called 'Rethink'. which is about renovating libraries. Right now the groups are looking at how we want to use the library and the future, because that will make a lot of difference to what we do.

So what else?
While Mrs Meehan was on Long Service leave, we have had Miss V with us. She will be back soon though, when Mrs Radford goes on leave! Thank you for your help, Miss V.

We also had a visitor from San Diego in June. Mrs Xureb from San Diego came to visit. She was full of vitality and interest in what Aussie students are reading. I will get to visit her library in San Diego in October. Wait for the pics!

It's Tuesday, so the Staff are buying

What a busy day! Not only did the competitions start, but the staff had a book buying spree! They have chosen all sorts of things for the non fiction collection.
Wait until you see the Mohammed Ali book in rap, or the amazing picture book about a red book. I am still scratching my head about that one!
There are also some cook books by a teenage chef. Everyone should look at the chapter on food and exams. It is really excellent!

OK, tomorrow we catalogue ALL day! I wonder how many we will have ready for Friday? Maybe that should be another competition!

Delany Reads! Week 2008

The theme for 2008 is 'Community'. This year Delany Reads! Week involves students, staff, and local librarians. Today, Monday, students bought for students. 14 students went to our local Borders and bought up big for the fiction collection.
The TAG_L had told the whole school about it at assemby and then gathered suggestions from everyone at home room. We spent a session discussing how to buy for other people. We looked at the group to which each was assigned, and thought about the range of people, ages, gender, English speaking ability, those that loved reading, those that didnt.. those that are sport mad and ... more.
Then this morning we descended on Borders and set up our base in Gloria Jeans. We had a reserved corner, so we piled books and checked our catalogue on our laptop.
We only had 2 periods out of school and we were soon in a buying frenzy!

Towards the end, we checked our purchases and grabbed bags of books and fled for the bus. Next time, we need more time!

I have been absent a lot recently. Sorry about that. I hit my head on the sun visor of the car (you are allowed to laugh... I think it is funny too!) on the day of the swimming carnival and have had problems ever since. I look forward to being back at work with a smile and a book next week!

Delany has a new school website!

When I arrived at Delany some years ago, the school had an amazing website. It had been developed by students and was the gateway to all sorts of school and local information. It struggled after the students left, and the site dated.

The TAG_L is going shopping.. to Borders!

As they announced at assembly last week, the TAG_Llers are going to Borders to buy books for students. They want to know what you want, so expect them to visit your Home Room this week or next. Give it some thought. Maybe you have heard of an amazing new book, or have read an author and want more. Maybe you want a series, or maybe you want more graphic novels. Is there a magazine title you would read? So, be prepared for the visit and give the students your ideas.
Here is your opportunity to make the library the BEST library in town!

Think Tank, please meet the TAG_Ls

This year, the users of our resourced learning space are spending time considering how it is used and how it could better serve the changing needs of both staff and students. I like the idea, because we can fine tune the space, services, activities, resources, as our needs and wishes change.
The Think Tank ( made up of staff members) will be conducting a full staff meeting in May, and the students introduced their L_TAG... sorry... TAG_L to the whole school last Thursday.
Why are we doing this? Because as education, learning, and libraries change, (First mention of the word 'library') we want a resourced learning space and services that help staff and students with resourcing and information services, efficiently, and empower them as teachers and learners.

More, we want it to be fun and to attract students, feeding their curiosity and encouraging students as readers. We want a wide range of activities and we want them to have a purpose that meets the ALA standards for the 21st-Century Learner that we have adopted.

Meantime, the TAG_L are setting up a lunch meeting with the Student Leadership Team.

I am making a note to charge the batteries so we get some pictures of this group this time. It should be good!

Australia says 'Sorry'

This is part 1 of the speech made by Prime Minister Rudd on Wednesday 13 February 2008. The Aboriginal peoples of Australia and the whole Australian community have waited for a long time for this. As Mr Rudd says, although officials were seen to be removing these children, these people were carrying out orders and these orders were implementing the laws of the land, Australia. It is right that the apology come from the the highest level.
Each time I saw the Aboriginal flag flying over the school on Wednesday I thought of the Dharuk people, on whose land the school is built. For me, a very moving experience.

Who is this library for?

If you are a student at Delany College or if you are a member of staff, then the library is for YOU.
That is why this year we are looking for ways to involve as many people as wish, in the development of the library so that it is the it best suits our needs and provides us with the best space to meet them.

The idea that the library is for everyone and everyone is welcome to a say, is not new. What is new, is what is happening.

* The L_TAG (Library Teen Advisory Group) is the student voice, and
* The Think Tank is the Staff voice.

The L_TAG meets twice a week and is working out events and projects that involve students. The Think Tank is organising a staff meeting in May to assess the school's resourced learning space.

Look forward to being part of exciting new developments in 2008!

It is day ONE of a new school year.
Welcome to the Year 7 students who were sitting in the library a few minutes ago!
After the end of a morning of information and introductions, it was finally my turn! You were so good! We learned that READING MATTERS in this library, and that students are involved in keeping it a very up-to-date and friendly through our L_TAG! What does L_TAG mean? Listen at Assembly next week!

I could see that you liked the idea of the students going shopping for library books - more about that later.
Then you did what the students at Doncaster did - you filled out profiles for the library walls. Come in and read what you are looking forward to, and who you like to read and why! Maybe we will take a pic and share them with the students in Doncaster too!

We've been celebrating!

The Book Club met today. It turned out to be our last meeting as 'Book CLub'. No, we haven't stopped reading!

Actually, as we remembered all the amazing things we have done this year, we realised we were MUCH MORE than a Book Club. At Mrs Radford's suggestion, we have become Delany College's L_TAG!

What is an L_TAG? We asked that too. In fact Mrs Radford saw L_TAGs, or Library Teen Advisory Groups, in Pennsylvania. She says we do just that. So we have changed our name.

So with party pies, sausage rolls, chocolate cakes and chips, we celebrated the end of our school year and wish everyone a Happy Christmas!

Thank you for the wonderful welcome home!

On Monday the Book Club, with the help of Miss V. and Mrs Meehan, arranged an Inkeys Lunch to announce the prizewinners. It was also, very coincidentally, my first day back! It was so good to see everyone and see how the group has grown while I was away. It was a great lunch and I was most impressed with my special lunch - a dish of rice, a croissant, a little meat pie and a hot dog. Each had the flag of a country I had visited. Which one had the Singapore flag?

More news from Florida

We didnt go looking for dolphins. We went to checkout Venice beach and pier, and the dolphins were there waiting for us! So close and so active! It was raining. Did I tell you it rains in FLorida? Often! But I guess as the dolphins were already wet, it did not matter to them. Me? well I thought it was well worth getting completely drenched to watch them play.

Then off to Orlando (serious site) which is the home of the Disney theme parks.
I visited EPCOT - which stands for the Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow, and includes the world showcase. I SOARED over California... (don't forget to raise your feet... you may lose them on a mountain ridge! ... Laughed around the Finding Nemo exhibit which combines the story with huge aquariums, yawned my way through the Lion King (sorry Simba, Timon and Pumbaa!), and we missed Spaceship Earth which dominates the whole place because it is being refurbished.
Then off to tour the world! I bought New Zealand Kiwi cream cake for my hosts, Wine from California, fried rice from China, pastries and coffee from France, and my French T shirts!! In case you havent realised it, there is a dining festival on right now.

There are no more librarians to meet, libraries to visit. No more curious students (I have a 'funny' accent!), and no more Reading Clubs to talk to. Just some time in Florida and San Francisco, then home.

Countries are different but people are not. Year 8 students in Doncaster are just like Year 8 in Sydney, and Grade 12 boys are very similar, whether in Pennsylvania or Delany, Adults too, have been overwhelmingly welcoming.

Librarians in schools are keen and progressive. We address similar goals but in so many different ways. Thanks for sharing your goals and aspirations and predictions of the future.

Hello... Council Rock, Pennsylvania

Why Council Rock? I met the school district library coordinator online some years ago and we have been in professional contact ever since. Today I visited 5 schools and the Supervisor of IT and the new Library Coordinator.

The highlights?

It is the week before Halloween and there are decorations everywhere!

The primary school that has an author autograph wall. Every visiting author gets to add something!

The school that can print large posters from powerpoint slides! Then they laminate them. I even asked how much.

The School where the LTAG group (Library Teen Advisory Group) ran a 'Survivor' event in January.

That is enough highlights for one blog entry... these schools are full of great ideas!

My most UN- favourite place!

Also known as Gatwick airport. I was there far too long, faced with far too many queues, and faced 2 full security checks. I asked why I had won the lottery, and the woman said ' You were next through, Maam', so they did not even think I was suspicious! No picture of Gatwick - it does not deserve one!
So goodbye UK, and hello USA!

What can you do in 7 hours in Paris?

Well, you can do a bus tour, have lunch on the first level of the Eiffel Tower (it was good too), cruise the 24 bridges of Paris, check out Michel Angelo statues, the Mona Lisa, and Venus de Milo (and much more), and tour some more. What you can't do, is shop! Not a minute to spare.
I have a brilliant picture of the Mona Lisa - over 23 heads! That painting is the most viewed in the collection.

You will also see the unexpected. Why seated here? There is hot air coming up through the grating.

Who did I meet on the Eiffel Tower?

I met Year 8 students from a school in the Lake District of the UK. These students were sitting on a bench, looking out at the view. I was impressed with Andrew, who shook my hand and told me about their trip.
So I gave him my card and now they can look at this blog when they get home.

Do you study Shakespeare?

Yesterday I visited the Globe theatre. I loved it because the guide was brilliant and shared so much about the life and times. I wsh there was a way to add her to our delicious for the Yr 8 topic!

I loved the Year 8 student who asked if they placed partly boiled heads on the little spikes we could see along the top of the thatched roof. The answer was no, because they displayed those heads on London's only bridge, and the little spikes? They are the for spraying water in case the place catches fire - like it did about 1617. (Hope I remember that date correctly).

I visited 2 schools in Doncaster, and each had 2 campuses. Thank you, Mrs Coppendale, for organising my visit when it was already a busy day for her. (I hope the concert went well!).

Here are the students in the library doing s KidLit quiz. These quizes come from New Zealand, and I think the questions were quite hard, but if you would like, we will try a KidLit quiz too.

Last week I attended a conference in Wolverhampton on 'Inspiring teenagers: Web 2.0 and libraries.' Now that is what our library site is about. (The blogs, the applications like Librarything, our delicious accounts.... the clustr map and our test drive sections, are all Web 2.0 aspects.)
I got a big surprise when, during one session, our librarything flashed on the screen! The presenter used it to show how it could be used.
What you are doing when you use the services on our site, is you are helping us work out what the school library site of the future may look like.
Thank you for being involved!

And hey! London rocks! Last night was Saturday night... we got lost on the way to Chinatown, 'rescued' by a rickshaw driver, and enjoyed a fabulous chinese banquet. By the time we tumbled out onto the street, London was buzzing! We took a second rickshaw home, and the ride was marked by three rickshaws burning off from the lights. Our guy won!! We have a movie of this ride, but it needs changing into a .mpeg. Maybe it will get posted and maybe not.

Tomorrow I have dinner with London teacher librarians, and the day after.. it is Paris!

Audio book update

We have been lending e-books or audiobooks for almost a term now. Almost everyone likes them and no one has had problems using them.
We bought another 10 titles at the audible sale so look for the updated list at the Circulation desk.
We have put little labels on the spines of our audiobooks. Remember to borrow the hard copy as well as the iPod. We do not loan ipods on their own.

Yes you heard right! We have 10 iPods and a number of books for you to read and listen to.

What books? The list is on the Circulation Desk and there are yellow markers in the collection.

Place your order and you can collect your book, the ipod loaded with the audiobook to collect at the next break.

You can have up to 2 weeks to listen, but most people need much less. Please return so others can have a turn.

Two weeks until Delany book awards!

One week until voting and some are madly reading the last book or 2 so they can vote on Wednesday. The rest who have read at least one book, are organising the Awards morning tea. We have the menu (most important), the invitations have been designed (thanks Rosette), the guest list is growing, and the theme has been set. Have fun everyone!

Delany 'Book of the Year' is underway

Each year we shadow the Children's Book Council Book of the Year event.
Some years we do not like the books too much, but this year, almost everyone likes almost all of them. So when we vote on the 15th August, the results will be a complete surprise.
Which books will win our awards this year?

'Reading is fun' day

Over the workroom table, the readers and other students who were around decided on a movie tie-in theme. After all, the best books are made into movies - aren't they?
Our display was almost as much fun as the day itself!
We had help from Miss V and Miss Walker, who were working with us during this time.
We decided to celebrate "reading is fun' because we found out that school libraries overseas were doing it, and we wanted to join in the fun!

On May 9 we are joining with schools overseas and will be celebrating 'Reading is Fun' by having a Pizza Lunch for all those that helped with the 'Delany Reads! Week', and a big promotion of movie tie-ins and books that SHOULD be movies!
Thanks, Book Club, for that suggestion! Yes, we do know we are a bit early with our celebrations, but we think no one will notice!

After talking with students who have taken part in the past and staff and anyone else who was interested, we have all decided to go with the Children's Book Council nominees again this year. HOWEVER we will also run Delany Choice awards in Term 4!

We will do both! We have not worked out the format of the Term 4 Awards, but it should be interesting, and if you have any thoughts about it, please talk to Mrs R or the Book Club.

Delany Book awards... some questions

Each year we read and vote on the Children's Book Council short list to find Delany's Book of the Year. But these books do not seem to represent the books that Delany students really like to read, and the purpose of the Delany Awards is about promoting and enjoying reading.

Students will come and look over the nominated books and walk away, and fewer and fewer students want to take part. You just do not want to read many of these books.

It is not that we are not discerning readers; we are very good at picking winners... or is it that the CBC judges are right in their choices?

So this year we are re-thinking our selection process.
We would like a selection of books that many people would like to read.

Let's do it a different way.
Let's still have Delany College Book Awards, but read a different set of books.

So.. WHICH BOOKS? We need some limits:
1. Published in 2006
2. Internationally - can include books from overseas as well.
3. In the Delany Library ( or available for purchase for the library).
4. ?

We have 2 weeks to discuss this. Whether you read this on the blog or on the noticeboard,
think about it and talk about it with your friends.

How would YOU select a list of 6 books to read for 2007? Meantime I will ask the staff to see if they have any ideas.

Thinking ahead

... to the release of a certain, long-awaited book. Which book?
'Harry Potter and the deathly hallows' ofcourse.
Ashley and Rosette and others have decided to mark the occasion in the library.
How?
Well they are going to turn us into Hogwarts library. While they are only in the initial stages of planning, decorations including a Hogwarts entrance, house crests and house coloured crepe-paper are included.
The concept of having a 'magic' book display has also come up, which will be intended to encourage those that enjoy the Harry Potter books to expand their variety of books.
A lunch is also in planning, yet negotiations will be necessary for space and foods.

Regular updates will be provided.

We called it hide n seek, but we did the hiding and you do the seeking.
Snoop around the library for the answers to 10 questions.
HINT: You can see all the answers. There is no need to touch or move anything.

The second is from the Readers group
They have filled this VERY large box will the books they have read from the library.
Now all you have to do is Guess how many there are.

'DELANY READS! WEEK ' starts on Wednesday...

Our Scholastic Book Fair arrives Wednesday.

Reading aloud sessions start on Wednesday at lunchtime - bring your lunch.
(Different readers and different books every day).

Now just HOW MANY books have the readers group read?
Check out the box in the library and record your guess. One guess each.
Mystery prize inside! Hint: You won't need a sugar fix for a long long time!

You think you are observant?
Answer 10 very simple questions correctly and be in the draw for a store voucher.
All the answers are VISIBLE in the library - that means you do not have to open a book or move anything. Just cast your eyes around the library. Simple!

Book Club is running again

We held our first meeting today and we planned what we will do this year.

Rosette says we can put a regular update in the school newsletter and that should work.
Christy says we should take turns writing it. Rosette will be first.

Mrs R Says we can help at the 'Delany reads! bookweek in March.

Reanne is in Year 7 and likes to read fantasy, adventure, mystery and action.
Precilla is reading the Skyflower and is of 2 minds about it so far.
Christy is in Year 7 likes Lemony Snicket and series and Roald Dahl.
Susie is in Year 7 too, and likes hip hop books, Tashi books, and big books, scary, funny, romance and more.
Sarah is reading 'Crybaby' and '10 things I hate about me'. She says its awesome!
Amanda has read 'Elsewhere,' and says its the best book ever.
Samantha is reading 'Does my head look big in this?' and it is excellent.
Kimberly is also in Year 7, and likes to read Paul Jennings, Harry Potter and funny books and more.
Rosette is chairing the meeting. We will get what she is reading later.
(She has finished 'Saving Francesca' and is reading 'Noughts and crosses' again).

Some of our friends from last year came to see us today. They are not coming to Book Club every week but they will help with Book Week in March.

Ever watched a wildlife program where animals are tagged and released into the wild so researchers can follow what happens to them?
Well these people tag and release books and track their travels through entries on this website.

The finder is asked to go to this website and register the find and then to register the time and place of release for others to find.

If your parents are readers, point it out to them, because this was not set up for students, it was set up for everyone.

If this seems fun, you should talk it over with your parents. It is fun, but it is also net based, and the usual Internet safety rules apply.

Unfortunately the fine print says that we are not eligible to compete, but you may like to take a look. It is sad that in these global days, promotions like this get restricted geographically. Maybe we could ask Harper Australia to do something similar for us.

We have had first choice from the Library Grant books today! Some of us borrowed 10 books for the Summer reading Challenge
We have food too as it is Christmas.

I have added a frappr map to www.delanylibrary.com . Why? I noticed that we get hits at all times of the day, including between 12am and 5 am. I know that people from other countries have been visiting us, so I thought it would be interesting to know where they are from.

Remember how we collected our favourite books on a big display earlier in the term? Well I made lists of all those books and now we need to make 'fave reads' posters for the library.

We could do with some help.

Thanks for all the books you have selected for the Fave Reads posters. Of course that means I have to type up the lists, and that will take a few days.

Secondly, there is a group of students who are writing a novel collaboratively online. If you would like to take part in something like this, ask at the desk for details.

Thirdly, Year 11 started their blogs for English and they are going to use them for their reflections for a whole year. Blogs are great for personal diaries too.
MySpace and Bebo are types of blogs.

A few weeks back Rosette asked if we could have a Book Club, so I said.. sure... do you want to organise it?
And that is exactly what she did!
Ashley, Rosette, Adam, Hena, Raymond, Precilla and Joel are sitting round the table talking about what they like to read, their favourite authors and their favourite books.
I hope they keep a note of what they read so they can share it too.

New ways to use the Internet

If you have talked to me recently, you know I am exploring new ways to use the Internet in learning.

The new ways are already here. They have at least 3 names - the 'SOCIAL INTERNET', the READ/WRITE WEB, or WEB 2.0 . All names for the same thing.

How we can use the new sites that allow us to contribute, edit, share, store, comment and network, and are so easy to use?

You can set up your own space as a blog (like this one), a personal space as in MySpace or Bebo, informative spaces such as Squidoo.
You can store stuff - pictures, photos, images, music, voice, video, bookmarks, files.
You can combine stuff - pictures and captions, pictures and voice, videos and voice, and much more (Useful for presentations?)
You can tag your material so you can sort, find and share.
You can check out what other people have on your topic.
You can meet and chat....

What I like are the storing/sharing sites, like Flickr for pictures, Delicious for bookmarks, iTunes for music and YouTube for videoclips.

Have a look and you will see they all have 2 things:
- 'tags', which are keywords you give to help you sort and find again.
- sharing with other users and the opportunity to comment.

So, blogs, wikis, storage sites - there are SO MANY!

Sites have different purposes. MySpace and Bebo allow users to create their own site with an emphasis on communicating and networking.

Are you a MySpace member?

Try the web search in MySpace. I have tested it with 3 of the topics being studied in the library in March, and again today, I was showing someone the web search and we got different, useful responses for the Year 8 water task. Try it next time you are researching.
About profiles. It is good to see how Delany students are now much more careful on the Web. In March, when I first visited MySpace, most profiles were public and many of you had photos that could identify you really easily. Now most of you have friends-only profiles, and if your profile is open it is obvious you have thought about what to put up.
People are using these site in different ways now. Are you using your space for your studies? If so, show me how.
About parents. That is the other good news. Every one of the students who have talked to me about MySpace said that their parents either knew of their membership, or had seen their pages. Parents should know about these things else they will not keep up with you and with the rapidly changing technology. It could be useful to show your parents the security pages in MySpace. These are very clear and sensible.

I posted about delicious back in July. The library has an account called delany_library and the link is on the www.delanylibrary.com website. Find it on the left hand column.

Year 8 are doing a task about Sydney water and they need to decide whether Sydney should be recycling or desalinating water.

I have found some sites for them and have 'tagged' them with Yr8, Science, and water. Some are also tagged waterCycle, desalination or recycling.

Year 8, you can find links by clicking a tag.

What is so good about delicious? It is easy and convenient - it is like your favourites in IE, except you can access them from any computer and in any browser.
It is also good because you choose how to sort your collection.

For me, the best part is I can see what other people are tagging on my topic. I pick up excellent links by networking with users who collect similar topics.

It is an excellent tool for students.

So how did we compare this year?

Every year we compare our winners with those selected by the national judges (who are all adults). Most years we are very close. Sometimes we agree on every one.
Not this year though.
Yes, the National judges selected The story of Tom Brennan and they also liked Sound of the Sea and the Life of Riley, which they placed first.

It is the Junior category where we completely disagree! For the second year in a row, the national judges have selected a book that NOT ONE Delany student selected.

This year they chose Helicopter man. While it is a 'good book', students at Delany found it hard to make sense of, and some came to me and some did not even finish it.

The readers say they will all be interested to see what the judges choose next year. If the same thing happens again, we will write to them.

Senior section: The story of Tom Brennan, tied with Double exposure
Junior section: Once
Picture book: Sound of the sea
If the Seniors were too close to call, Once was a clear winner in the Junior section. There were only 3 people that did not vote for it.
The Picture book section was closer, and we also liked The life of Riley.

It is Book Week at Delany!

Today students are voting for their favourite books from the CBC Shortlist. It is by secret ballot, so the results will not be known until they are announced at the Awards Morning tea tomorrow!

Delany students and the CBC judges generally agree on the winners. Last year, the Younger Reader winner was an exception. That book didnt even make it to our final round of judging. NO ONE voted for it! This is one of the reasons we have our own judging. We want to see if adult judges select books that really appeal to students.

Tomorrow we will post our winners.

Are you looking for short stories?
Type in 'short stories' - there is a very long list
Some are in Fiction and start with F
Some are in the Literature section and start with 821

Are you looking for poems? Look in the 822s
Type in 'poetry'

What about finding change about a particular issue?

Pick an issue - like divorce.... type in divorce - Fiction
and see what you get.

Any issue.

You may like to look at a newspaper. Ask Mrs Meehan

photographer section and the art section

Are you still using Favourites and Bookmarks to save sites?
http://del.icio.us is a social bookmarking site which saves and sorts your bookmarks for you.
You can access them from any computer and in any browser. You can also share your sites. Look for other people who use the same tags.
The library has a spot at del.icio.us. Search for delany_library.
I am marking anything of interest to students as I come across it.
Use the 'tags' to sort your links into subects.

Have you heard about Web 2.0? It is a catchy name for the technologies that make the web easy to use, and are set up for everyone to contribute.
There are blogs and wikis and social bookmarking. There are combinations of these, and then there are the social networking environments that many people use.
